Health and Fitness

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”  1 Corinthians 6:19-20, NIV

Honoring God With Our Bodies

The Word of God tells us that the human body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.  The physical body and proper maintenance thereof have been one of the least addressed areas in the Church.  If the temple is out of order, can the Spirit fully flow?  This ministry is designed to teach the body of Christ the importance of proper eating, exercising, and resting, so that we can live long, strong, and healthy lives that are pleasing to God and able to fulfill our earthly assignments.

The Health and Temperance Ministry seeks to improve the quality of life for all through health promotion and disease prevention, and holds various events throughout the year to include:

  • Seminars – food, nutrition, fitness, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cancer, diabetes, and other health topics
  • Walking and Running club (Capitol Hill Area Runners’ Movement)
  • Cycling club (Capitol Hill Urban Cycling Club)
  • Health Fairs
  • Blood Pressure Screenings
  • Cooking Classes

An avid supporter of medical research, the ministry also participates in annual fundraising efforts, including the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, and other local and national efforts.

The ministry partners with other area ministries to develop health tips, fitness classes, and forums for our congregation and the surrounding community to encourage exercise and healthier diets at all age levels.

The goals of this Health & Temperance Ministry are to:

  • Promote Christian growth along with wellness programs that will empower the Body of Christ
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of  the members and guests of Capitol Hill Church
  • Present activities, information, and opportunities to address the health needs of our church and communities
  • Promote and optimize wellness by helping to prevent illnesses and injuries
  • Expand the Capitol Hill’s reach in the community by  collaborating with various community health agencies in an effort to offer and provide supportive health care services to our congregation and communities.

In addition, it seeks to identify health professionals in the congregation and surrounding community in order that they can be available at Capitol Hill services, activities and events to provide effective first aid and emergency response information.  See Medical Team ministry page.

Aerobic Classes

Aerobic classes are taught by a certified aerobics instructor on each Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. Classes are free and open to the public. The classes are designed to promote cardiovascular endurance, strength and flexibility.  The classes help both women and men develop healthy, strong bodies and achieve their weight and body-toning goals in a caring, nurturing environment.  All classes are led by professional fitness instructors, and are held in the Fellowship Hall.

The club also trains for local cycling events.  The group provides basic instructions about bicycling, introduction to road riding, and riding in a group, sharing the road safely and legally, health information, and helmet safety.  The group rides regularly on bicycle trails, paths and lanes in the Washington Metropolitan Area.
