Home & Community-Based Services
DARS helps older adults remain safely and comfortably in their homes and communities through services such as:
- In-home assistance with bathing, dressing, housekeeping, wellness checks, and daily chores.
- Medicare counseling through VICAP to help individuals understand and navigate Medicare benefits and coverage options.
- Nutrition and meal programs offering healthy meals in home-delivered and community settings.
- Wellness and disease prevention programs focused on exercise, fall prevention, and chronic disease management
Long-Term Care Support
DARS provides guidance and advocacy for individuals and families navigating long-term care decisions, including:
- Long-Term Care Ombudsman services to protect the rights, dignity, and well-being of residents in care facilities.
- Assistance in exploring care options, including home health services, adult day care, and residential care facilities.
- Support understanding Medicaid, Medicare, and long-term care financing options.
- Auxiliary Grant information for eligible low-income Virginians needing housing and supportive care assistance.
Caregiver & Family Support Services
Recognizing the vital role caregivers play, DARS offers resources, education, respite support, and grant information to assist individuals caring for loved ones.

Employment & Community Engagement
The Senior Employment Program helps low-income older adults gain meaningful employment opportunities while assisting employers in recognizing the value, experience, and contributions of older workers.
